Why Coaching?
Coaching is "the missing link"
in the traditional approach to learning. Many of the traditional
approaches of imparting new knowledge do not translate into changes in behavior.
Coaching is a far more effective solution. Coaching engages the uniqueness of
the individual. Coaching is an ongoing relationship that raises awareness,
connects the client with their passions and strengths, and holds them
accountable to get the results they want. People grow and change with a
coach.
Coaching as Follow-up to Training. Talk to anyone about what's
broken in the current learning and development process, and most will tell you
it's the lack of serious post-training follow-through. The best
organizations are the ones that expend 10 times the amount of effort reinforcing
the training they deliver as they did in conducting it in the first place.
As a primary follow-up strategy, coaching improves application back on the job
from 20 to 80%!
Coaching as a Primary Learning Strategy. Our 24/7, fast-paced life and
work styles have created a breed of people, and a breed of leaders, who suffer
from an imbalance: a lot of action with little or no reflection. They're
chasing "what works" but are disconnected and displaced from "what matters."
Coaching provides a space where the creative and intuitive work of reflection
can occur.
Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote
that, "Most of us go to our graves with our music still inside us."
Coaching ensures that this doesn't happen!
What is Coaching?
Professional coaching is an ongoing partnership that
helps clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional
lives. It is fundamentally about facilitating change that will lead to
desired results: facilitating movement from a current state to a more desirable
future state.
Coaching is an art of discovery
more than a science of delivery. The use of questions and conversation in
coaching means that the coach begins from a posture of humility and curiosity,
not authority and knowledge. The coach serves as a catalyst in the
client's own journey of discovery. This inquiry approach makes respect for
the expertise of the client its starting place. The inquiry model is built
on a belief that real growth must come from within. It cannot be grafted
onto a leader, as the instructional-consulting model suggests.
Coaching through inquiry helps
individuals use what they're innately good at. It helps them build on
their strengths, develop flexibility and change-readiness, create awareness of
shortcomings and build commitment to self-development and achievement. As
a result of coaching, clients set better goals, take more action, make better
decisions, and more fully use their natural gifts and talents.
One-on-one coaching is a
helping relationship. It is based on the desire of the coach to assist the
client in performing at his or her personal best and the willingness of the
client to stretch and grow. A coach plays the role of confidante, sounding
board, champion and mirror. What leader wouldn't want someone on his side
with whom to discuss creative ideas, doubts, petty irritations, and the
performance implications of all of those?
