Leadership
Defining Leadership
Everyone
wants to work in a place where there is a high level of trust and confidence,
where employees feel valued, the work environment energizes and excites people,
and where each person shares the company’s core values and is motivated by its
vision and purpose. But what is the magic ingredient for creating a workplace
like this?
Leadership! But more specifically, servant leadership. Servant leaders
are motivated by a purpose larger than themselves and routinely seek to draw out
the latent capabilities in others. Regardless of their position, they
create a positive and upbeat work culture that yields higher levels of team
member satisfaction, creativity, and productivity.
"Purpose
always serves - it is the manner in which we use our gifts to make a
difference in the world. Purpose is not purpose without adding value
to others. It is not self-expression for its own sake; it is
self-expression that creates value for those around you." - Kevin
Cashman
As leaders, we lead by
virtue of who we are. True leadership and success in life come from first
knowing yourself, choosing your behaviors and actions based on this self
knowledge, then serving in authentic and genuine ways that seek to develop
others and build trust. Leadership success or failure is usually due to
qualities of the heart. And emotional intelligence - the capacity to both
understand and manage the emotions of yourself and of others - provides the
foundation for all effective leaders.
Having
answered the question, “Who am I?”, you must then focus on developing specific
communication and leadership skills to address two additional questions, “Now,
what am I going to do?” and “How am I going to do it?” Building on your
strengths, personality preferences and values, you must learn how to leverage
the power of relationships to achieve high performance, both individually
and collectively. Success at work (and in life) ultimately boils down to the
ability to connect with others and function as part of a team.

More On Leadership
A values-based approach to developing and implementing organizational strategy
is essential for effective leadership and organizational success. As
outlined in Hidden Value: How Great Companies Achieve Extraordinary Results
with Ordinary People, authors Charles O'Reilly III and Jeffrey Pfeffer,
share that truly successful companies begin with a set of fundamental values
that are energizing and capable of unlocking the human potential of their
people.
“Before we
begin to think about what the leader does, perhaps we should think about who
the leader is, because a leader defines leadership in his or her own terms.
In the end, it’s the quality and character of the leader that determines an
organizations performance and results. Think about this in relation to
the job of transmitting the organization’s values. It’s not enough for
the leader just to say, ‘These are our values,’ If those values are
really going to permeate the organization, the leader has to embody them.”

Frances Hesselbein – Former CEO of the Girl Scouts and
chairman of the Peter F. Drucker Foundation

"The most important assets
of world-class 21st century companies will be what I call the 3C's: Concepts
(ideas and technologies, driven by innovation); Competence (skills and the
ability to use them, improved by teaching and learning); and Connections
(strategic relationships, nurtured by collaboration). These soft
assets rooted in human qualities - imagination, courage, creativity,
sociability, diplomacy, trust - will increasingly overtake hard assets as
the most important source of a company's value. Leaders of the future
will continue to have a fundamental, enduring job of mobilizing individual
talent in pursuit of collective ends. But there will be more emphasis
on encouraging people to seek change, share their knowledge about it and
collaborate with other members of the extended enterprise to implement it
effectively - which will stimulate further innovation, completing the circle."
