Building Your Team's Morale, Pride, and Spirit

According to the Center for Creative Leadership (Leading Effectively eNewsletter - May 2005), "building team morale, pride, and spirit at work enhances productivity and efficiency and leads to tangible economic and relational benefits.  When morale, pride, and spirit are present within a team, productivity is high, relationships are strong and it’s fun to go to work."

Leaders of teams that exhibit these qualities excel at meeting the social and emotional needs of their team members.  They realize that people have two key social needs: the desire to be part of something that is greater than oneself and the desire to be validated by others.  When individuals’ needs for belonging and validation are met, the team and organization will reap the rewards.  Team members will show more ownership, buy-in and identification with the team’s goals and the team will experience greater trust, good will, and cooperation.

Effective team leaders typically exhibit the following characteristics:

  1. They're genuinely concerned about and interested in the people they lead.

  2. They're flexible and adaptable.

  3. They're authentic, open, and self-disclosing.

  4. They’re passionate about the work.

  5. They're "always there for the team." 

Developing and displaying these characteristics can be a challenge for leaders in general, but they can improve with training plus ongoing coaching and support.
