Work Environment Assessment

In the book Enlightened Leadership, Ed Oakley and Doug Krug created a list of what people want in their work environment.

Rate your work environment on the each of the following items on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 = not at all like my company/organization and 10 = exactly like my company/organization.

Work

  1. Clear, inspiring goals.
      
  2. Stimulating, challenging work.
      
  3. Adequate resources.

People

  1. To be respected and appreciated.
      
  2. Encouragement to express creativity and try new ideas.
      
  3. Authority appropriate to responsibility.
      
  4. Freedom to do the job.
      
  5. Freedom to "fail" or make mistakes.
      
  6. Adequate compensation and other rewards.

Leadership

  1. Responsive, caring leadership.
      
  2. A place where management says what it means, means what it says, and does what it says it will do.
      
  3. Opportunity for input in decisions.
      
  4. High priority on growing and developing people.

Environment (a responsibility of leaders to create)

  1. A can-do, positive, winning attitude as a way of life.
      
  2. Honesty and truthfulness as a way of life.
      
  3. Empowered people open to change.
      
  4. A sense of team.
      
  5. A high level of trust.
      
  6. People taking responsibility.
      
  7. A solution orientation.

How Did Your Workplace Do?

Total up your ratings and consider the following:

    1 to 60 = How current is your resume?!
    60 to 140 = A lot of room for improvement.
    140 to 200 = Please share your secrets for success with others!

If you feel courageous, circulate this list and ask your employees and co-workers to rate your workplace.  Use this as a dialogue starter for how you can get better.
